We are now inviting applications for the 2010 entry to The
Prince of
Wales’s Graduate Fellowships in Sustainable Architecture and Urbanism.
The deadline for applications for this year’s programme is 29
January 2010.

The one-year paid Graduate Fellowship will commence in July
2010 and
will be hosted by The Prince’s Foundation in London, and will involve
placements at The Foundation. Subject to performance and economic
conditions, Graduate Fellows will spend a second year in a placement
with committed practitioners in the United Kingdom. The Fellowship
attracts an annual salary of £20,000 in the first year.

The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment has
established the Graduate Fellowship to meet the need for the next
generation of architects and designers who will evolve traditional
architecture and urbanism in response to the global climate and
urbanisation challenges. We believe that comprehensive and practical
action is needed to train designers who can evolve traditional
approaches to planning and designing in response to our contemporary
ecological crisis.

The two-year programme begins with a three-week residential
summer school, based next year in Wales. This unique event will provide
an introduction to the holistic approach to planning, designing and
building practised at The Foundation, and will provide an intensive
course in key skills such as drawing, painting, design, construction
and the implementation of traditional urbanism. The Fellows will then
be attached to departments of The Foundation and work within one of the
three, multidisciplinary Projects teams of urban designers, architects
and facilitators, promoting and implementing traditional urbanism, and
subject to availability will participate in an Enquiry by Design (a
unique, practical tool for engaging partners in a design-led process)
and in major educational events. Fellows will also work on research
projects, help to produce events, and write and produce reports and
design studies.

Through a regular masterclass and seminar programme, Fellows
will be taught by many of the world’s leading urbanists, traditional
architects and transport reformers, and will contribute papers based on
their own research. In the second year, Fellows produce a dissertation
of around 30,000 words on an aspect of sustainable urbanism.

From August 2011, subject to performance and economic
conditions, the Fellows will be seconded for one year to an appropriate
architectural, planning or urbanist practice. During that summer, they
will also be expected to spend a week at the residential summer school,
sharing their expertise through teaching craft students and architects
how to apply traditional building techniques to architectural processes
and urban interventions.

Course Fees are as follows:
EU NON-EU
First year full time £12,000 £16,500
Second year part time £ 7,800 £10,725

A number of full bursaries will be available and students should
indicate if their application is dependent on a bursary. In 2008 six
full bursaries were awarded.

Candidates for this programme must be Part 1 graduates of an
accredited programme in architecture, urban design, planning, landscape
architecture or a related discipline, and must demonstrate an
understanding of the relevance of the principles of sustainable
urbanism and a commitment to tackling the ecological challenge.
Applications are welcomed from students at, and graduates of, all
relevant universities and colleges. Please note that applications must
be accompanied by a brief letter of reference from the Head of School
or equivalent.
