Literature
MA and PhD Graduate Programs

Bilkent University's
Department of Turkish Literature offers graduate studies at M.A. and Ph.D.
level. The areas of specialization cover the Pre-Islamic, Selchuk, Ottoman,
Tanzimat, and Modern Republican periods. Folk literature is also a recommended
field. (Literary studies relating to other Turkic nations
are not
offered).

The Department was established in 1998. Its faculty consists of
Talat S. Halman, Chairman, Semih Tezcan, Hilmi Yavuz, Öcal Oğuz, Mehmet
Kalpaklı, Nuran Tezcan, Laurent Mignon, Kudret Emiroğlu and others. (In the past
years the Department has had such faculty members as İlhan Başgöz, Robert
Dankoff, Victoria Holbrook, Metin And, Sevda Şener, Süha Oğuzertem et al.) The
Department has so far awarded 80 MAs and 9 PhDs, most of whom are employed at
universities in Turkey and abroad. Some are employed as editors or lycee
teachers.

The Department publishes the
annual "Journal of Turkish Literature", the only English-language scholarly
journal devoted to Turkish literature in its entirety. Although Bilkent's
language of instruction is English, the Department of Turkish Literature
conducts all its work (courses, lectures, homeworks, essays, exams and theses)
exclusively in Turkish. However, students are expected to prove their
proficiency in English before they complete their MAs. PhD applicants must prove
their English-language proficiency before they are admitted. On the average the
department accepts up to 12 students to its MA program and 5 into the PhD
program each year. The application deadline is about the 10th of June every
year. The applicants are required to write essays in person and take interviews
with the faculty.

An undergraduate degree in Turkish literature is NOT a
prerequisite for entering the MA or the PhD program. All students entering the
MA program must take a preparatory year. The second year is devoted to further
courses in Turkish literature. The third year almost in its entirety is for
thesis writing. Almost without exception all PhD students who have their masters
from universities other than Bilkent or do not hold a master's degree from
Bilkent's Department of Turkish Literature are required to spend their first
year taking preparatory courses and if they are considered successful, they may
then be admitted as regular PhD students.

All students who are admitted
to the Department are normally given tuition waiver and monthly stipends.
Students from outside of Ankara are eligible for free campus housing in shared
graduate dormitory rooms. The Department is unique in the world in that it
provides completely free graduate work plus stipends, etc. for all of its
students (the total number varies from 50 to 60).

General information on
