2009 "Sakip Sabanci International Research Award" amongst your colleagues,
students or co-workers, through your networks and TSA's web site. This award has
been endowed in perpetuity by the late Sakip Sabanci, Honorary Chairperson of
Istanbul's Sabanci University's Board of Trustees.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>"Pluralism in Contemporary Turkish Society and
Politics" has been set out as the topic for the 2009 Award. The competition is
open to all scholars in the social sciences and humanities working on
</FONT><FONT face=Garamond size=4>contemporary Turkey. The selection committee
will give priority to those submissions which have the potential for publication
in a leading scholarly journal.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>The Sakip Sabanci International Research Award
entails a first prize of $20,000, a second prize of $10,000, and a third prize
of $5,000. An independent, international jury will be selecting the prize

<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>Topic: "Pluralism in Contemporary Turkish Society
and Politics"</FONT></P>
<P><FONT size=4><FONT face=Garamond>Sabanci University is pleased to announce
the topic for the "Sakip Sabanci </FONT><FONT face=Garamond>International
Research Award" for the year 2009. The topic for the 2009 </FONT><FONT
face=Garamond>Award is "Pluralism in Contemporary Turkish Society and
Politics".</FONT></FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>The deadline for submissions is Friday, 27
February 2009.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT size=4><FONT face=Garamond>The competition is open to all scholars in
the social sciences and </FONT><FONT face=Garamond>humanities working on
contemporary Turkey. The selection committee will </FONT><FONT
face=Garamond>give priority to those submissions which have the potential for
</FONT><FONT face=Garamond>publication in a leading scholarly
journal.</FONT></FONT></P>

e-mail, in the form of an attached Word or PDF document to the following

<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>The Sakip Sabanci International Research Award is
named in honor of the late Mr. Sakip Sabanci, a prominent Turkish philanthropist
and business leader. The corporation that he headed, Sabanci Holding, is one of
the world's largest family owned businesses. Mr. Sabanci was also the founder of
Istanbul's Sabanci University, one of Turkey's leading academic
institutions.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>The Award is designed to promote fresh thinking,
new ideas, and original research relevant to Turkish studies conducted in any
field of the humanities and social sciences. It is administered by the Trustees
of Sabanci University and the prize winners are selected by an independent,
international jury.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>The 2008 Competition</FONT></P>
<P><FONT size=4><FONT face=Garamond>In 2008, the first prize went to Amy Singer,
an Associate Prof. of Ottoman History in the Department of Middle Eastern and
African History at Tel Aviv University, with her essay, "The Persistence of
Philanthropy". Winner of the second prize was Maureen Jackson, doctoral
candidate at Washington University's Comparative Literature Department, with her
essay "Crossing Musical Worlds: Jews Making Ottoman and Turkish Classical
Music". The winner of the third prize was Olivier Bouquet, </FONT><FONT
face=Garamond>Associate Prof. at the Nice Sophia-Antipolis University, and
research </FONT><FONT face=Garamond>fellow at the Modern and Contemporary
Mediterranean Centre in Nice, with his essay "Old Elites in a New Republic: The
Reconversion of Ottoman Bureaucratic Families in Turkey
(1909-1939)".</FONT></FONT></P>
