<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>Rome, Italy, 16-17 September 2008</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>This is the first announcement and call for papers
for the international conference on "Diversity in Cities: New Models of
Governance" to be organized by the Psychoanalytic Institute for Social Research
in Rome, Italy on Tuesday September 16th and Wednesday September 17th, 2008.

<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>Diversity is becoming a key feature of European
societies. European integration, global migrants, the aging of the population,
and changing gender roles have brought diversity onto the agenda. Both the state
and private organizations need to find appropriate and effective ways to
understand and deal with diversity and researchers are increasingly called upon
to make sense of this diversity and provide research to support public and
private action that contributes to sustainable diversity. This conference looks
at one of these aspects, focusing on the governance of diversity by public
bodies and local government with particular emphasis on the potential for city
governance to contribute to the sustainability of diversity. The conference
begins a discussion of how diversity cannot only be measured and understood, but
actively managed in order to foster the development of diverse and dynamic
cities.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>The conference is organized by Raffaele
Bracalenti, President of the Psychoanalytic Institute for Social Research, and
Vanja Stenius, also of the Psychoanalytic Institute for Social Research. It is
the 4th of 5 conferences on diversity falling under the auspices of the Marie
Curie Series of Conferences entitled "EURODIV: Cultural Diversity in Europe: A
Series of Conferences" (MSCF-CT-2004-516670). For more information on EURODIV,
please visit the project website at </FONT><A

size=4>http://www.susdiv.org</FONT></U></FONT></A></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>EURODIV Conferences intend to bring together young
researchers and leading scientists to exchange knowledge in a spirit of mutual
learning. The call is mainly addressed to early-stage and mid-career
researchers, who conduct research on diversity (see below for details). More
experienced researchers are welcome to submit an abstract. However, precedence
will be given to submissions of high quality by junior researchers. Each paper
will be offered the possibility of being published in the Working Paper Series
of the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) subject to a standard review
procedure. EURODIV participants may also be invited to present their research at
an annual meeting of the SUS.DIV Network of Excellence and/or to work with
SUS.DIV partners on research endeavours. Such participation is pursuant to the
review of EURODIV papers by SUS.DIV executive committe.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>The conference is organized around four main
topics: </FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>1. Maps and indicators of diversity: Tools for
good governance. Good governance is dependent upon valid and relevant
information. This session welcomes papers that address indicators or means of
measuring and conceptualizing diversity in a manner that is useful for public
bodies and local policymakers for the sake of identifying and localizing
residents' needs (e.g., social services, language support, childcare for working
mothers) and appropriate responses. Keep in mind that diversity does not just
refer to immigrants or different ethnic groups, but also demographics such as
age and gender and the roles that these different groups take on within the
community.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>2. Theory and models of governance. This session
welcomes papers that address the application and relevance of current theories
and models of governance to<SPAN class=755012611-28022008>
</SPAN>problems/challenges posed by diversity. Are these models and theories
adequate? What changes or modifications are called for? What are their
implications for sustainable diversity? </FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>3. Fostering sustainability from the top down:
Governance in practice. The scope of governance extends beyond understanding the
population mix to seeking out means to address community needs and problems;
thereby fostering community stability and sustainability. This session welcomes
papers that address the impact of governmental policies and practices-at the
city level- on the sustainability of diversity or present innovative policies
formulated to address the needs and challenges posed by an increasingly diverse
population while taking advantage of the opportunities and strengths that such a
population provides.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>4. Sustainability from the bottom up: Civic
participation in governance. Governance in democratic societies requires the
direct and indirect participation of diverse groups of citizens. This session
focuses on the inclusion of diverse groups in governance (e.g., right to vote in
local elections, employment by government bodies) and general level of civic
participation. Particular focus should be placed on the level of
inclusion/marginalisation of migrants, women and other disadvantage groups and
the impact on the sustainability of diversity.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>Grants:</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>There are several grants available for the
conference. Grants cover living expenses (up to a max of EUR148.95 per day) and
travel expenses (up to the maximum established on the basis of travel
distances). A small number of grants are destined to researchers that do not
have a paper to submit. There are no conference fees.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>Researchers eligible for funding:</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>Group 1: Early-stage researchers. Researchers
attending the event for training purposes who have, at the time of their
attendance, no more than 4 years of (full-time equivalent) research experience
since obtaining the diploma that gives you direct access to doctoral studies in
the country in which the diploma was obtained and who do not have a doctoral
degree.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>Group 2: Mid-career researchers. Researchers
attending the event for training purposes who have, at the time of their
attendance, a doctoral degree or 4-10 years of (full-time equivalent) research
experience since obtaining the diploma that gives them direct access to doctoral
studies in the country in which the diploma was obtained.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>Group 3: European researchers active outside the
Union. Researchers attending the event for training purposes who have, at the
time of their attendance, more than 10 years of (full-time equivalent) research
experience since obtaining the diploma that that gives them direct access to
doctoral studies in the country in which the diploma was obtained, who are
nationals of Member States or Associated Member States and who are active in
research outside the Member States and Associated Member States at the time of
the event.</FONT></P>
