<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>Dear Colleagues,</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>I am working on an edited collection of essays
selected from those presented at the international symposium Visions of
Struggle: Women's Filmmaking in the Mediterranean that I organized and was held
at Wellesley College in November 2007. While at the moment scholars on women
directors from Italy, France, Israel, the Maghereb and the Balkans have
committed to submit their work, I am still looking for contributions by women
scholars on women directors from Spain, Greece, Turkey, the Middle East and
Egypt. I wonder if you would be interested in participating in this collection
or if you would have names of women scholars expert in contemporary women
filmmakers in these countries. Thank you for all the help that you could give me
in this difficult and urgent search.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>Description and goals of the book
proposal:</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Garamond size=4>Focusing on the neighboring countries in the
Mediterranean rim, as the general unifying geo-cultural location for a
contemporary discussion on women's human, civil, and social rights, this book
elaborates a cross-cultural definition of being a woman in struggle,
transcending geo-ethnic boundaries and bringing together shared life
experiences. The collection situates feminist arguments on questions of women's
psychology, anthropology, and sexuality. Such issues are examined through the
works of contemporary women directors from Mediterranean countries, whose cinema
is confrontational and relevant to the discourse of women's studies. These
artists are mobilized by diverse cinematic forms of intervention, take on the
responsibility as leading advocates for women's problems, and purposefully use
their cinematic art to document a new feminist social realism. Contributors
examine films which are expressions of counter-cinema, cultural contestation and
political commitment for Mediterranean women's collective experience of
struggle. Innovative in content, groundbreaking in its multi-disciplinary
approach to film text analysis and women's issues, this volume is a significant
contribution to the development of transnational and comparative feminist film
studies. Visions of Struggle is an excellent resource for scholars and students
interested in film, women's, and cultural studies in the
Mediterranean.</FONT></P>
