<P>invites applications for a Junior Professorship in Islamic Studies with Focus
on Islam in Europe. The successful applicant will be required to actively engage
in teaching and research in this area. In line with article 102a of the Berlin
Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz), the successful candidate will
have a Ph.D. reflecting her or his outstanding academic qualification. Previous
work in the academic field — both prior and subsequent to the conferral of the
doctoral degree — should not exceed a total of six years. The appointee will
hold a doctorate of exceptional quality. She or he must have a background of
successful university teaching, preferably in an international context.
Candidates are further expected to have a record of publications in
internationally renowned journals, as well as experience with externally funded
research. The successful applicant will be required to actively engage in
teaching and research on Islam in Europe using the perspectives and
methodologies of Social Sciences and Islamic Studies. She or he is expected to
be actively involved in the Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies as
well as in general instruction at the Institute of Islamic Studies.
Participation in interdisciplinary research clustersat Freie Universität Berlin
is further indispensable. Competence in relevant languages is essential, as is
the capability to teach in English and German. In general, the language of
instruction will be German, although some teaching may be conducted in English.
The initial contract for this position is for the duration of three years, for
which the junior professor will be granted civil servant status with limited
tenure (W1). Provided that her or his performance is evaluated positively, the
contract will be renewed for three more years.</P>

Islamic Law (W2; 5 years) The successful applicant will be required to actively
engage in teaching and research in this area. In line with article 100 of the

professorship, or equivalent postdoctoral qualification is required for this
position. The successful candidate will have a proven record of university
teaching and research, with a strong international background in this field,
especially the theory and practice of Islamic Law in the context of society and
culture. She or he is further expected to have experience in securing and
implementing externally funded research projects. The appointee will be expected
to participate actively in the Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies and
in the teaching program at the Institute of Islamic Studies, including the B.A.
program in History and Culture of the Near East. She or he should also be
prepared to collaborate with interdisciplinary research clusters based at Freie
