The Center of Excellence EXC16 „Cultural Foundations of Integration“
at the University of Konstanz invites applications for three half-time
Ph.D. Positions (salary scale EG 13 TV-L) starting October 1st, 2007,
limited to three years in the framework of the research group “Idioms of
Social Analysis”.

The research group is dedicated to the
interdisciplinary investigation of academic and non-academic social
analyses, especially in regard to their potential to co-constitute society
and culture. Social analyses do not exclusively emerge within the
discipline of sociology. They form a vaguely defined discursive field
which also comprises other academic disciplines (such as literary studies,
political science, or historiography) as well as non-academic debates
(such as in journalism or fiction). Therefore the members of the research
group investigate social analyses from the viewpoints of the sociology of
knowledge and the history of ideas as well as from narratological and
genreperspectives.

The research group focuses in particular on
discourses and practices of criticism as part of social analyses. Further
information can be obtained
at:
http://www.uni-konstanz.de/exc16/english/NW-gesellschaftsanalyse.html.

Ph.D. projects may address, but are not restricted to, the
following topics and issues:
Critical social analyses in modernity, the
history of their impact and their relationship to projects of political
integration.
Structural changes in genres of social analysis and their
relationship to practices of academic criticism.
Comparison of
different social analyses and their forms of criticism.
Mechanisms of
the tradition of critical social-analytical theories and
currents.
Social-analytical genres from the viewpoint of the sociology
of knowledge and the history of concepts.
Criticism of society in the
social sciences and the constitution of orders of justification and
legitimation.

The University of Konstanz is an equal opportunity
employer and tries to increase the number of women in research and
teaching.

The University encourages disabled persons, who will be
given preference if appropriately qualified, to apply (Contact 0049-
7531/88-3725).

The University of Konstanz has been certified by
the Hertie Foundation to be a family-friendly institution. The University
is committed to further the compatibility of work and family life.

Applicants should hold an outstanding M.A. or Magister/Magistra
degree or diploma in social sciences, literary studies, philosophy,
history or/and in related areas. Applications including a CV, a
publication list (if available), copies of diplomas and a brief exposé of
the Ph.D. project (not more than five pages) in German or English must be
emailed (in attachments) as PDF-files by August 15th, 2007 to
exc16@uni-konstanz.de or Sibylle Braun, Universität Konstanz, Center EXC16
“Cultural Foundations of Integration“, 78457 Konstanz, Germany.
