We are interested in organising a panel for the 2007 MESA conference on Ottoman Cyprus. Despite some remarkable, yet isolated, contributions, many aspects of the Ottoman legacy in Cyprus remain obscure, and there is little understanding of the practicalities of its functioning as an Ottoman province. Consequently, we are open to any contribution that would shed light on hitherto unknown aspects of the island's Ottoman past.

We would particularly encourage contributions on economic and social history, the place of Cyprus in Eastern Mediterranean trade routes, comparisons with other Ottoman provinces, relations between the Imperial centre and periphery, the reflection within the island of broader processes throughout the Empire, as well as inter-disciplinary approaches. In short, the panel will attempt to situate Cyprus in the Ottoman context, as well as explore its distinctive and indigenous characteristics.

Please submit your abstracts in one of the two email addresses below no later, and preferably earlier, than 5 February, 2007.
