ruled Jerusalem. Between the Jews, Christians and all others who claim Jerusalem
as their holy city, the Turkish rule was longest in the history of the Holy
Land. First Seljukids, Artuqids and Zangids, and after that Mamluks from (1250
to 1516) and lastly Ottoman Turks ruled (from 1516 to 1917) in Jerusalem and
surroundings. But despite this long rule, the Turkish heritage and contribution
to Jerusalem is often overlooked or underestimated in the literature.

The
Ottoman inscriptions from 1516 until 1917 are published in this book. Max van
Berchem's famous Corpus of Jerusalem Inscriptions contains most of the
inscriptions but he left out many inscriptions that were in Turkish language or
were of recent date. But what was recent in 1900s is now more than 100 years old
and needs to be published. In this book there are 122 inscriptions from
Jerusalem and other parts of Ottoman Palestine mostly published for the first
time. Many are published with new interpretation and improvement of readings.

This book builds further on many publications of inscriptions and all
the inscriptions are collected under one cover. All the inscriptions are
accompanied by recent photos on paper and on CD-ROM, so that one can check the
inscriptions and the author's interpretation and readings. There are also
detailed maps of the locations of the
inscriptions.

CONTENTS

Acknowledgement 9
Acknowledgement of
