> EUROPEAN SOCIOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION
>=20
> MASS MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH NETWORK
>=20
>=20
> SEMINAR ON CURRENT RESEARCH
> ANTALYA, TURKEY =E2?? NOVEMBER 3-5 2006
>=20
>=20
>=20
> The ESA Sociology of Mass Media and Communications Research Network
> meets every year, including at the main ESA conferences. The last
> meeting was at the ESA conference in Torun in 2005. The previous year,
> as has been the network=E2??s regular practice, it met as a group for a
> more informal network only seminar in Thessaloniki. Details of these
> and other meetings are all available on the Network=E2??s website
> (http://www.valt.helsinki.fi/esa/commun.htm).
>=20
> In 2006, courtesy of the University of Ankara, the Network will hold a
> meeting in Turkey (in Antalya) on November 3rd to 5th. Further details
> of local arrangements will be posted on the website and circulated to
> Network members as they are confirmed. This initial notice is both to
> confirm the date and to issue a Call for Papers. Local accommodation
> and hospitality will be subsidised or possibly even fully paid for by
> our hosts. It may be possible to offer some assistance with travel
> costs for young scholars or others unable to receive support from their
> institutions. This will be confirmed later. Membership of the Network
> is simply achieved by sending your details (if you have not done so
> previously) to Sarah Barnard (S.H.Barnard@lboro.ac.uk). There is no
> fee. We do strongly urge members to join the ESA itself. This should
> be done directly with the ESA (go to
> http://www.valt.helsinki.fi/esa/membership.htm). The Network meetings
> seek to foster dialogue between researchers interested in sociological
> aspects of media and communications in Europe. To that end our network
> meetings aim to be inclusive of topics and research areas, but we wish
> especially (though not exclusively) to invite papers for this Seminar,
> whether theoretical or empirical, which are rooted in sociological
> concerns, and which may be especially interested in:
>=20
> =E2?=A2 The role of the media in fostering or inhibiting a =E2??European public
> sphere=E2??;
> =E2?=A2 Changes in the political economy of the European media industries;
> =E2?=A2 Sociological analysis of media culture, especially comparative studie=
s;
> =E2?=A2 Changes in patterns of consumption or reception of media output;
> =E2?=A2 Theoretical innovation and debate within sociology of relevance to
> scholars concerned with media and communications
>=20
> Abstracts (no more than 500 words) should be submitted to Sarah Barnard
> by no later than July 31st 2006. They should include full contact
> details for the authors. The programme will try to accommodate as many
> papers as possible, but we will have to exclude any by authors unable
> to confirm attendance at the Seminar by a date to be announced
> subsequently. These network seminars have always been exceptionally
> enjoyable, collegial and productive occasions, and we very much look
> forward to seeing as many colleagues as possible at the Antalya meeting.
